How to Wire an Illuminated Toggle Switch
Complete step-by-step guide for safe installation
Safety Warning
Always turn off power at the circuit breaker before beginning any electrical work. If you're not comfortable working with electricity, consult a qualified electrician.
Tools and Materials Needed
Tools Required:
- Wire strippers
- Screwdriver set
- Voltage tester
- Wire nuts
Materials:
- Illuminated toggle switch
- Electrical wire (appropriate gauge)
- Wire connectors
Understanding Terminal Types
Power Terminals
Usually marked as COM (Common) and NO (Normally Open)
LED Terminals
Separate terminals for the illumination LED (+) and (-)
Ground Terminal
For safety grounding connection
Step-by-Step Wiring Instructions
Step 1: Turn Off Power
Locate the circuit breaker controlling the circuit and turn it off. Use a voltage tester to confirm power is off.
Step 2: Prepare the Switch
Remove the switch from packaging and identify all terminals. Most illuminated toggle switches have 4-6 terminals.
Step 3: Connect Power Wires
- Hot wire (black): Connect to the COM (Common) terminal
- Load wire (black): Connect to the NO (Normally Open) terminal
- Neutral wire (white): Connect directly to the load neutral (not through switch)
Step 4: Connect LED Illumination
Connect the LED terminals to provide illumination when the switch is on or off (depending on desired behavior).
For "ON" indication: Connect LED positive to switched hot, LED negative to neutral
For "OFF" indication: Connect LED positive to unswitched hot, LED negative to switched hot
Step 5: Ground Connection
Connect the ground wire (green or bare copper) to the ground terminal on the switch and the electrical box.
Step 6: Secure and Test
Secure all connections with wire nuts, mount the switch in the electrical box, and restore power to test functionality.
Common Wiring Configurations
Single Pole Configuration
Most common setup for controlling one load from one location
DPST Configuration
Double pole single throw for controlling two separate circuits
Troubleshooting Tips
LED Not Illuminating
- • Check LED polarity (+ and - connections)
- • Verify voltage matches LED requirements
- • Test LED continuity with multimeter
Switch Not Functioning
- • Verify power supply at switch location
- • Check all wire connections are secure
- • Test switch continuity in both positions
