How to Wire a Three-Way Toggle Switch
Safety Warning
Always turn off power at the circuit breaker before working with electrical wiring. If you're not comfortable with electrical work, consult a licensed electrician.
What is a Three-Way Toggle Switch?
A three-way toggle switch allows you to control a single light or electrical device from two different locations. This is commonly used in hallways, stairways, and large rooms where multiple switch locations are convenient.
Key Components:
- Two three-way toggle switches
- Three-wire cable (14 AWG or 12 AWG depending on circuit)
- Two-wire cable from power source
- Wire nuts for connections
Understanding Three-Way Switch Terminals
Terminal Types:
- Common Terminal: Usually darker colored or marked "COM"
- Traveler Terminals: Two brass-colored terminals
- Ground Terminal: Green screw for ground wire
Wire Colors:
- Black: Hot wire (power)
- Red: Traveler wire
- White: Neutral wire
- Green/Bare: Ground wire
Step-by-Step Wiring Instructions
Step 1: Turn Off Power
Locate the circuit breaker controlling the switch circuit and turn it off. Use a voltage tester to confirm power is off.
Step 2: Install Switch Boxes
Mount electrical boxes at both switch locations if not already installed. Ensure boxes are properly secured and grounded.
Step 3: Run Cable Between Switches
Run 14-3 or 12-3 cable (with ground) between the two switch locations. This cable contains the traveler wires.
Step 4: Connect First Switch (Power Source)
- Connect hot (black) wire from power source to common terminal
- Connect red and black traveler wires to traveler terminals
- Connect neutral (white) wires together with wire nut
- Connect ground wires to ground terminal and box
Step 5: Connect Second Switch (Load End)
- Connect wire going to light fixture to common terminal
- Connect red and black traveler wires to traveler terminals
- Connect neutral wire to light fixture neutral
- Connect ground wires to ground terminal and box
Step 6: Test the Circuit
Turn power back on and test both switches. The light should turn on/off from either switch location.

Common Troubleshooting Tips
Problem: Light Won't Turn On
- Check circuit breaker
- Verify all wire connections are tight
- Test light bulb or fixture
- Check if hot wire is connected to common terminal
Problem: Switch Works from One Location Only
- Check traveler wire connections
- Verify switch is wired correctly
- Test continuity of traveler wires
- Ensure switches are actual three-way switches
