How to Install a Push Button Starter Switch
Complete step-by-step installation guide for electrical professionals

- Wire strippers
- Screwdriver set
- Voltage tester
- Wire nuts
- Electrical tape
Components Needed
- Push button starter switch
- Mounting hardware
- Appropriate gauge wire
- Motor starter/contactor
Step 1: Turn Off Power Supply
Locate the circuit breaker controlling the motor circuit and turn it OFF. Use a voltage tester to verify that no power is present at the motor starter and control circuit.
Critical: Double-check with a non-contact voltage tester before proceeding.
Step 2: Mount the Push Button Switch
Select an appropriate location for the push button switch, ensuring it's easily accessible but protected from moisture and physical damage. Use the provided mounting hardware to secure the switch enclosure.
- Mark mounting holes using the switch as a template
- Drill pilot holes if mounting to wood or drywall
- Secure with appropriate screws for your mounting surface
Step 3: Identify Terminal Connections
Most push button starter switches have the following terminals:
START Button (Green)
- • Normally Open (NO) contacts
- • Momentary contact when pressed
- • Typically terminals 1-2
STOP Button (Red)
- • Normally Closed (NC) contacts
- • Opens circuit when pressed
- • Typically terminals 3-4
Step 4: Wire the Control Circuit
Connect the control wiring according to your motor starter specifications:
Typical Wiring Sequence:
- Connect L1 (hot) to one side of STOP button NC contacts
- Connect other side of STOP button to one side of START button NO contacts
- Connect other side of START button to motor starter coil terminal A1
- Connect motor starter coil terminal A2 to neutral (L2)
- Wire auxiliary contact (13-14) in parallel with START button for holding circuit
Step 5: Connect Power Wiring
Connect the main power conductors through the motor starter contacts to the motor terminals. Ensure all connections are tight and properly insulated.

Turn the circuit breaker back ON and test the switch operation:
- Press the START button - motor should start and continue running when released
- Press the STOP button - motor should stop immediately
- Test emergency stop function if equipped
- Verify proper motor rotation direction
