How to Hook Up a Toggle Switch
Safety Warning: Always turn off power at the circuit breaker before working with electrical wiring. If you're not comfortable with electrical work, consult a qualified electrician.
Understanding Toggle Switch Basics
A toggle switch is a simple electrical component that controls the flow of electricity in a circuit. It has two main positions: ON and OFF.
Common Toggle Switch Types:
- SPST (Single Pole Single Throw)
- DPST (Double Pole Single Throw)
- SPDT (Single Pole Double Throw)
- DPDT (Double Pole Double Throw)

Wire Strippers
Voltage Tester
Screwdriver
Wire Nuts
Step-by-Step Wiring Instructions
Turn Off Power
Locate the circuit breaker that controls the circuit you'll be working on and turn it OFF. Use a voltage tester to confirm power is off.
Identify the Wires
Typically you'll have:
- Hot wire (usually black) - carries power from the source
- Neutral wire (usually white) - returns power to the source
- Ground wire (usually green or bare) - safety ground
Prepare the Wires
Strip about 3/4 inch of insulation from the end of each wire using wire strippers. Twist the exposed copper strands together.
Connect the Hot Wire
Connect the incoming hot wire (from power source) to one terminal of the switch, and the outgoing hot wire (to the load/device) to the other terminal.
Connect Neutral and Ground
Connect neutral wires together with a wire nut (these don't go through the switch). Connect ground wires together and to the switch's ground terminal if present.
Test and Secure
Turn power back on and test the switch. If working properly, secure all connections and install the switch in its mounting location.

✓ Do's
- • Always turn off power before starting
- • Use proper wire gauges for your application
- • Make secure connections
- • Test with a voltage tester
- • Follow local electrical codes
✗ Don'ts
- • Never work on live circuits
- • Don't overload the switch rating
- • Don't use damaged switches
- • Don't skip the ground connection
- • Don't guess - when in doubt, consult an electrician
