How to Hook Up a Toggle Switch

Safety Warning: Always turn off power at the circuit breaker before working with electrical wiring. If you're not comfortable with electrical work, consult a qualified electrician.

Understanding Toggle Switch Basics

Toggle switch components

A toggle switch is a simple electrical component that controls the flow of electricity in a circuit. It has two main positions: ON and OFF.

Common Toggle Switch Types:

  • SPST (Single Pole Single Throw)
  • DPST (Double Pole Single Throw)
  • SPDT (Single Pole Double Throw)
  • DPDT (Double Pole Double Throw)

Step-by-Step Wiring Instructions

1

Turn Off Power

Locate the circuit breaker that controls the circuit you'll be working on and turn it OFF. Use a voltage tester to confirm power is off.

2

Identify the Wires

Typically you'll have:

  • Hot wire (usually black) - carries power from the source
  • Neutral wire (usually white) - returns power to the source
  • Ground wire (usually green or bare) - safety ground
3

Prepare the Wires

Strip about 3/4 inch of insulation from the end of each wire using wire strippers. Twist the exposed copper strands together.

4

Connect the Hot Wire

Connect the incoming hot wire (from power source) to one terminal of the switch, and the outgoing hot wire (to the load/device) to the other terminal.

5

Connect Neutral and Ground

Connect neutral wires together with a wire nut (these don't go through the switch). Connect ground wires together and to the switch's ground terminal if present.

6

Test and Secure

Turn power back on and test the switch. If working properly, secure all connections and install the switch in its mounting location.
