How to Wire a Toggle Switch

Single Pole Toggle Switch (SPST)

Step-by-Step Wiring Instructions
Step 1: Prepare Your Tools
- • Wire strippers
- • Screwdriver set
- • Voltage tester
- • Wire nuts
- • Electrical tape
- • Toggle switch
- • Appropriate gauge wire
- • Safety glasses
Step 2: Turn Off Power
Locate the circuit breaker for the circuit you'll be working on and turn it OFF. Use a voltage tester to confirm power is off.
Step 3: Identify Wire Types
Hot Wire (Black)
Carries current to switch
Neutral Wire (White)
Returns current to panel
Ground Wire (Green)
Safety ground connection
Step 4: Make Connections
For SPST Toggle Switch:
- Connect incoming hot wire (black) to one terminal
- Connect outgoing hot wire (black) to other terminal
- Connect neutral wires (white) together with wire nut
- Connect ground wires (green/bare) together and to switch ground screw
Step 5: Test Installation
Turn power back on at circuit breaker and test switch operation. Ensure the connected device turns on/off properly.
